Castles, cathedrals and goulash oh my!
From Backpack Attack in Prague, Czech Republic on May 05 '08
Prague is wonderful! The first day I was here I didn´t get a chance to see much, so yesterday was a dream. We, Ruth and me, stopped for coffee and apple strudel at a cafe that Kafka and Albert Einstein use to hang out in (not together). I´d read about it, but we literally just walked passed it and decided to go in.
After that we walked up the street headed towards the Charles Bridge and we came around the corner to see a breath-taking sight. There was the castle and the bridge and it was amazing, like walking into a postcard. We toured the bridge where a little jazz band was plazing.
It started raining at some point and we went in to a restaurant and tried Goulash. It was awesome! It´s like arich, favorful beef stew that Prague is famous for. Delicious!
Then we went to the castle and the huge cathedral within the castle. We climbed 300 steps to get this spectacular view from the top of the cathedral and were almost knocked down the tiny winding staricase bz crazy school kids playing "let´s kill the american tourists bz running down the staris."
We then made our way out of the castle. I bought a little painting of Prague from a little old man who was painting along one of the streets. We found the old jewish cemetery and were able to see it through a little window, itwas expensive to go in. Then off to old town square for some more amazing views.
We found a Tesco, grocery store, and bought some pasta and wine which we made back at our hostel. There was no bottle opener, but I was very Macgiver that evening and found a knife andpushed the cork into the bottle. I also lit the gas stove using my Macgiveresque skills. We only had a lighter, no matches and we couldn´t get the flame close enough to light it without burning ourselves. So I lita piece of spaghetti, which acted as the match. Thank you Real Simple magazine!
We went to a local jazz club after that and relaxed after a very long day on our feet. It was a pretty fabulous day. Ruth and I work well together as travel buddies. We just kind of wandered, rarely using a map and in no hurry. We saw everything, but still managed to stop and take pictures, shop or eat whenever we felt like it. Wonderful, wonderful wonderful.
Prague is a city packed with history. It´s beautiful and elegant, but small enough that you can walk everywhere. It is everything that I hoped it would be.
I put pictures from my trip up too!
