We just love the Portal, AZ-Rodeo, NM area. It is very remote and beautiful and just about 2 1/2 hours from either Tucson or El Paso.

The towns are in a valley between the Chiricahua and Peloncillo Mountains. The area is known as a paradise for both birders and astronomers (due to the unusually dark skies and nearby mountain observatories).

For us, it is a delightful place to get away from the crowded cities and to relax, read, and enjoy the outdoors.

On this trip, we visited the nearby Chiricahua National Monument. It is absolutely gorgeous with many hiking opportunities and great wildlife viewing.
