Taman Negara
From Around the world in 90 Days in Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia on Mar 03 '07
What a wonderful place! Hot, sweaty jungle, but fabulous scenery and wildlife.
The trip up here from KL was an adventure in itself. After the coach ride we had a three hour boat journey up to Kuala Tahan, spotting water buffalo, monkeys and wild boar along the way, and waving to the friendly locals. This is pristine tropical rainforest, reputed to be the oldest in the world.
We are staying in a really nice chalet in the main resort (treated ourselves - again!). Although we have had a few uninvited visitors in our room including 'Basil the Bushrat' who had an interest in sharing our chocolate cookies.
This morning we headed into the jungle to walk across the 350m Canopy Walkway which gave us a great view over the treetops. Then we headed up to a lookout - hot work but worth it for the stunning view. Then back to the village to down several pints of water, as we had probably lost a few kilos in sweat on the way up.
The next day we headed off for a half day trip to Lata Berkoh, a cascade a few kilometres up the river. On the way, we saw some beautiful stretches of the river where the tree canopy forms an archway over the river. After a short walk through the jungle we had time for a quick dip on the river to cool off before heading back to camp.
Its a beautiful place, definitely a highlight of the trip so far.
