Granada
From London to Durban via Latin America in Granada, Nicaragua on Oct 17 '07
The shuttle bus took just over and hour to get to Granada. On the bus we met an american girl who had recently married a nicaraguan guy. Its the most complicated system, that takes sooo long to process its got to be quite tough. So they´re living here for the 12months its going to take to him clearance into the US.
In Granada we headed to the Bearded Monkey hostel. Unfortunately they didnt have enough rooms for us. So we searched a bit more before agreeing to spilt into nearby hotels. The buildings are all strictly colonial - very high ceilings, inner courtyards. Its been raining on and off so we havent done too much. Its got a similar feel to Antigua, though the latter is definitely cheaper and has more language students.
We walked down to the lake, which looked pretty miserable (the overcast day wasnt adding to its appeal in the slightest). Near the lake, a local school seemed to be presenting some environmental projects on the island in the middles volcano. In addition, younger girls did some traditional dancing on the most hideous music. Jeremy and Steve lasted about 2 acts and that was it, we were out of there!
Jeremy clearly had other things on his mind and dragged us into the nearest sports bar, that was surprise surprise, showing the france-pumas game. It was entertaining to watch and we munched in true american style on Gringo rolls and chilli cheese dogs.
