I can see Mexico from here
From Walking the Pacific Coast in Imperial Beach, United States on Jan 08 '08
Mexico is right there. I am starting my hike in Imperial Beach (3.5 miles north of the Mexican border). I was planning on starting in Tijuana, Mexico, but the winter surge of the Tijuana River has made it impassable. I start my day with a bus ride to the Old Town San Diego Transit Center and then the trolley 11 stops south to Palm Avenue. The town I encounter when I get off the trolley seems far more third world then something this side of the Mexico/USA border should be, but I put my game face on...and walk directly to the Imperial Beach Municipal Pier (another mile down the rundown, scary Palm Avenue). With the sound of seven helicopters over my head circling the border south of me I start out on my beach walk. Several signs on the pier announce it is unsafe to swim or surf on the beach as the water is quite severely polluted, yet I witness a few brave surfers tempting fate. This beach is one-of-a-kind. With the exception of the surfers at the beginning of my hike, I have my own beach, all 8.125 miles to myself. Soft sand, the waves on my left, the sun in my face, a sand dune on my right that keeps me from noticing the military base lurking just out of sight...it is all mine. The left side of the peninsula is Silver Strand Beach, the right side is off limits, because the military owns that land. I walk and walk alone pushing through to the Coronado area where suddenly people emerge near a mess of high rises and finally the Hotel del Coronado. My feet are killing me, and I can't be bothered to tour the famous hotel. I just want to make it the last three miles on the bike path to the ferry landing. I keep pushing through, forcing myself to put only one foot onto each of the squares of stamped concrete in front of me...to keep myself moving forward. I make the 5pm ferry to Broadway Pier. I walk two blocks up the street to the bus station. I have finished another 11.25 miles. I am on terra firma and I can take my shoes off finally. The hostel is a party again. I sit on the sideline, contemplating tommorrow's hike...too tired to bother trying to party with them. I am going to do day hikes for the next few days, to keep the weight off my back in an effort to prevent more blisters.
How much money does the USA spend each day to keep all those helicopters continuously circling the air?
