Our first experience of Zambia on this trip was the border post, which was horrendously hot and crowded. Talk about inefficiency; I’d forgotten how horrible African border crossings can be. After wrestling several elderly and/or pregnant people to the ground, we managed to push our way through the throng to the counter and pay too many greenbacks for the privilege of entering a country which isn’t exactly swamped with tourists. It was a real relief to get to Livingstone and meet up with my Mum, Gran and other relatives. The main purpose of the whole trip was to have a bit of a family reunion in Zambia, and we almost didn’t make it.

We stayed at a hotel within walking distance of Victoria Falls, which was excellent. There wasn’t as much water in the falls as there would have been at another time of year, but they were still pretty spectacular. The zebras walking around the hotel grounds were pretty nice too.

After the falls we went up to Lusaka and spent a week or so there doing family things, including having a family get together, which was excellent. Lusaka’s a lot more modern and developed now than it was when I was there in 1998and looks to be a decent place to live.
