Chilling Out in the Beach
From South Indian Style in Varkala, India on Aug 11 '07

Getting out of Kanyakumari was a bit hectic. Sundays in India are crowded, and the bus station seemed to be a permanent race to get the incoming bus. So we decided to go by train which was fortunate since we thought we had to change in Trivandrum but manage to get a direct connection to Varkala.
Entering Kerala is amazing: lots of palm trees, little rivers... From Varkala train station we got a bus (Lonely planet guys must be crazy telling us there isn't any).
Varkala has a nice cliff, and a narrow road that goes next to the edge where all cafes, restaurants and lodgings are set. This is a really touristic place, prices are hence higher. A lot of people spend one weak here and go back saying they have been in India... Nothing could be more detached from reality. We just found our french companions in the airport taxi ride in Chennai! They did pretty much the same as we, gess it is standard in this part of the country.

The place is nice and we are resting for the rest of Kerala but here there is a lot of haressing from sellers, restaurant boys... They always try to get the fresh meat and most of the places are either too western (especially in price) or are simply not good, so watch out!
But sometimes it's nice to have a western fix, we got ours upon arrival. Went to this place "Cafe Italiano" and ate good pizza.
We'll be hear for 2 days.
