Our first break down! The air conditioning stopped working....and it never got fixed.... Even though all the men aboard the bus went back there to take a look!

Four hours from Recife we found ourselves in the capitol of the state of Alagoas, Maceió. Not much happened here.....we basically hung out by the beach and enjoyed the fine craft work unique to Alagoas. Marcela bought herself a beautiful head band, which you will notice in almost every picture from now on!

We caught a bus from Maceió to Penedo called the Pinga Litoral....probably not the best decision we´ve made so far! This bus took eight hours to complete a 2.5 hour trajectory! Our intention was to get a chance to see all the small town found along the way.....but there´s too many of them and the roads are awful on a good day!

Those who live along its banks speak of it as a friend, hence the nickname Velho Chico

The small town of Penedo is located on the southern bank of the São Francisco river, across from the state of Sergipe. There is no river like the Sáo Francisco, which is the third most important river in Brazil, after the Amazon and the Paraguay. It´s importance stems from it´s geographical location being that it cuts through the Sertão, making this area of Brazil habitable. Those who live along its banks speak of it as a friend, hence the nickname Velho Chico (old francisco). Penedo is fascinating because till this day it is a colonial masterpiece, almost unaltered.

Our bus ride through Pernambuco and into Alagoas was practically one big sugar cane plantation.
