Journal Entry by Sandy McDonald

Originally the group thought that this entry was going to be a short one…but the day turned out to be a lot more interesting than just traveling on a bus. Today’s goal was to travel from Copan, Honduras to San Salvador, El Salvador via Guatemala without getting kidnapped or robbed! The bus was supposed to leave at 11 a.m., but as we had quickly discovered Central American time dictates that leaving around 12:30 would be more accurate.

We almost lost some of our luggage today! We all got on the bus to El Salvador while the bell boys placed a few bags on the bus to Belize. Good thing we noticed before the busses left!

The bus ride passed quickly because most of us slept. There was a short stop at the Guatemalan border where we had to show our passports and pay $2 to enter the country. Uliana was lucky to get her passport stamped—the rest of us didn’t think to ask for a Guatemalan stamp. The stop at the Salvadoran border was quick; only a passport check was required.

Upon arrival at the Alamo, which was quickly becoming our home away from home, we said “see you later” to the Salvadoran Rotaractors and Interactors. The Canadians took some time to rest. We ate deliciously North American Pizza Hut for dinner (but the pizza might have led to some sickness throughout the night and the next day), did some groceries and geared up for our first day at the orphanage the next day.
