Just a stones through away - we can't believe we are just a short drive from such an iconic and legendary location!
We took a non direct route to Stonehenge to get off the beaten track a little. We saw a whole village of thatched roofed cottages and some very old looking stone dwellings and very narrow roads.
Winter proved to be a good time to visit Stonehenge as it wasn't very busy, but on the downside it was freezing!! Either because we haven't adjusted to the English winter or because we thought "we have a rental car we'll be ok" we didn't bring the necessary hats, scarves and gloves, so after an hour of walking round we were so cold and our ears so painful that we had to leave and seek refuge in the warm gift shop. The Stonehenge fudge was very good.

They provided us with an audio guide, which was helpful as we knew very little before hand. But to be honest mostly what we know now is that some how some people moved some huge stones for a reason nobody really knows.
We also came across the lesser known and much less busy Woodhenge (ie. we were the only ones there and Grace slept through it). It's basically now a whole lot of concrete posts in circles in a field, once upon a time there may have been a timber structure in a similar vain as Stonehenge.

We drove through Warminster and several other small towns trying to find somewhere that served food and ended up in Longridge Deverills for lunch.
