A 2 hour flight, operated by Finnair, brings us to Singapore arriving at 18.15 local time. Our mantra so far has been to arrive at our destination and then worry about money and accommodation. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but it adds to the adventure. Money was no problem - I even picked up a SIM card at the Bureau De Exchange - but accommodation not so easy. Turns out there's a IMF convention in town and everythings nearly taken. Hostelworld.com has shown every budget-type hostel, hotel and guesthouse to be booked out for tonight thus leaving us with the option of a swanky hotel. Ah well, it's splurge time. RECL International hotel was the answer at SIN120(60 euro) for a twin room. The room is everything you need including a balcony - woooh :o)
When in HK, I had met Caroline a friend of Oli's who works and lives here in Singapore. Being the hostess with the mostest she was happy to meet up with us and have a bit of a boogie. Her boyfriend(AJ) and 2 of his friends were in town so there was a good gang. We first went to Q bar along Boat Quay (nice place) before hitting a few bars (one had a set of drums [I couldn't help myself], another a vodka freezer lounge [I couldn't help myself]) and then a club in Forbidden City, Clarke Quay. It was a fun night. Note to self - you go on a mad one if you don't have dinner and then drink vodka black with redbull; haha all good natured of course!
48 hours in Singapore..
On Saturday, we had planned maybe a day at the zoo or checking out a few museums but we were quite lazy and pretty much just had a chill day. Caroline has generously suggested we can stay in hers, when we're next passing thru Singapore again so we think we will take up her offer. We'll be able to see some of the things we want then. In HK, I was also introduced to Trudi's friend, Thavy. She has some contacts in Ministry of Sound and kindly got us on the guest-list. Brill! We had a great night [Thanks Thavy!]. Room 54 was a great laugh. It plays the cheesiest dance music which we loved. The room was full of strobe-lights and had a funky dancefloor. The moves we were coming out with :o)
A mid-afternoon flight on Sunday meant we couldn't really do alot. We had a stomach stretching Sunday carvery in Muddy Murphys - 3 courses for $20. Great value!
We didn't have too much time in Singapore to properly judge it. It's definitely the clean city everyone talks about, that's for sure. The laws are strict (no chewing gum, no spitting, no j-walking, no drugs (dealth penalty)) which kinda reminds me of Orwell's 1984 but that's not all bad. It's an extremely safe city and there's a level of respect here between people which is refreshing especially to the snobbish side of me. No tracksuits in sight when shopping haha (and boy could you shop here). There seems to be an older crowd here, in comparison to Hong Kong, which is not a bad thing but it makes me feel that it would be more a good place to live and work in your early to late 30's. This is our first stop in Singapore - it'll be nice to see more of it in a months time..
