From Mexico Adventure in Taos, United States on Sep 23 '06

Juan Galan has visited no places in Taos
Here's what the map looks like viewing Rio Grande Gorge and Tres Orejas Mountain to the left. The red flag is Casa Juan Galan.

Here we are in Tres Orejas (three ears) 1/2 hour west of Taos, New Mexico--just west of the Rio Grande River Gorge. Tres Orejas is on the eastern slope on Tres Orejas Mountain. It is a small off-the-grid community of hippies, PhDs, entrepreneurs, natural builders, artists, crafts persons, retirees, Buddhists and more--quite diverse! Dirt roads--no power lines--no wells or water mains--completely off the grid. All energy is alternative--solar, wind, rain collection, etc.

I have a small house in Tres Orejas, Casa Juan Galan. It, naturally, is off the grid too. I live there some of the time and also in another small village about 20 minutes north of Taos. I've been building the house mostly by myself--for quite a few years. Right now I'm upgrading it to include a bathtub and a real flush toilet. I'll probably sell it when I'm finished. I had hoped that it would be by now, but I guess it'll wait until sometime next year.

Tres Orejas has a community of Buddhists, mostly Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhism), but also some Zen Buddhists and Vapassana Buddhists.

The Tibetan Buddhists have a center that is visited every Saturday by a Lama from Santa Fe. They have a large meditation hall, a Stupa (check Wikipedia), a library for sacred Tibetan texts and a great view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east. Their Saturday meditations are open to the public, if you happen to get out that way.

You can find Tres Orejas on the interactive map on this blog. Go left (west) from Taos and first you will find the Rio Grande Gorge (if you know Spanish, you know that adding "River" is redundant) then to the west a little more you'll see Tres Orejas Mountain. The community of Tres Orejas is just right (east) of the mountain. None of this is labeled. If you zoom in far enough you can see Casa Juan Galan--3 blocks east from the corner of Good 'Nuf Road & Chiatanya's Flag Road. This is not an invitation--contact me first, if you want to visit.
