Most weekends we would travel one of the small towns around Amsterdam to visit a museum. The trains are fantastic and it is very easy to travel all over Holland by train. We only rented a car three times, for weekend trips to Groningen in the North, to Brussels, Brugge and Maastrict over Thanksgiving, and to the wine area in Germany along the Mosel at the end of September.
