Ghent with a guy named Guy
From My time in Europe 2006 in Ghent, Belgium on Jun 18 '06
Remember that fella I met in Santiago who was a Belguim? Well, he stuck to his word and met me at my hostal in Brussels at 11am on the 19 to be my personal tour guide. When we met though he said he'd much rather show me Ghent, his home town about 1 hour away by train. "Sure!" I said, though I declined staying at his house for the night.
Ghent is a very pretty town with a lovely little river and 3 famous towers. It also has a midevil castle that we explored. We had a traditional Belgium lunch and I tried Fries (which are not actually of French background but of Belgium) with mayonase. Not too bad. Strawberry flavored beer was also sampled, though with not as amazing results. Not my thing, but not bad. Guy was a great tour guide and also provided very nice friendly company.
A nice little town and a scary way home
At 10 I got on a train to head back to Brussels and this is where my day hit the fan. Warning: MOM, DAD AND OTHERS WHO ARE PROTECTIVE OF ME, KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM OK AND EVERYTHING TURNED OUT ALRIGHT. So, I moved cars at one point on the train because there was a sketchy guy I was nervious about. When we got to my station at around 11:15 I couldn't get the doors to open on the train so I was forced to ride another stop to the north station. No big deal, I thought. I can walk from here, this is the station we took this morning anyway. Applying my good visual memory I got myself most of the way home. But, then I came to the park that we had cut through and being almost midnight it of course was locked. Wanting to stay on well light roads I took a little path on the side of a busy road. This path eventually turned into about a foot wide and next to the high way. As cars wizzed by me I eventually decided to turn around and face the dangers of the side streets, at least I could fight back there or run. It's hard to take on a truck.
My venture into the side streets lead me to an area lit with red neon lights with ladies in the windows. Golly, I'm not suppose to be in Amsterdam for another 2 days I thought! Well, sweating and scared I eventualy found my hostal at about 12:30. What a night.
