Lets see what all the fuss is about
From Travel 2005/2006 in San Salvador, El Salvador on Oct 22 '05
Well, since many people opt out of El Salvador due to it not having a good enough backpacker infrastructure and due to safety fears, what more could I do but make my way down here???
I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and besides, I had read multiple articles about the most friendly and warm people in Central America being the Salvadorans. Got to San Salvador after a 11 hour bus ride from Flores on Sunday 23rd Oct........I thought the bus drivers in Africa drove fast and reckless....but boy was I wrong......I obviously hadn't been on this bus before!!!!! Anyways, after a journey of clenching onto my seat with all my strength, and seeing a few crashes on the way, I got to my hostel in a nice suburb of San Salvador. Didn't do much that evening as I wasn't yet familiar with the area and was slightly worn out. Just relaxed in front of the TV and got to know a few of the other travellers about. Monday was all about relaxing, and I set out with my roommate (an American guy called Matt) to the local shopping mall......a big USA-style mall, to such an extent that one would not believe they were in a 3rd world country if thats the 1st place they went to. Believe it or not, the whole day was spent in this mall!! After Matt left to continue on his trip, I met a girl from the hostel and hung out with her for the rest of the day. Ended up watching The Longest Yard at the cinema, and discussed visiting the city of Santa Ana with her.
