Day 6 - Las Vegas
From Roadtrip USA Summer 2006 in Las Vegas, United States on Jul 21 '06
Today I travelled across the desert to Las Vegas. The journey itself was fairly uneventful to be honest. More desert. More heat. Not many cars. Etc etc. However, I have discovered something rather disturbing about Americans (well, it could just be Nevada as I didn’t notice this before). I was happily filling up my car with petrol this morning when a guy walked across the forecourt smoking a cigarette. This was closely followed by another guy smoking a cigarette casually lumbering across the tarmac. Have these people not been told that cigarettes and petrol are not the safest of combinations?? I had visions of me going up in flames and providing an extra heat source for the already scorching hot desert. I have to say that I was less than impressed and showed it by glaring at them from behind my sunglasses – I’m sure that showed them I meant business. The only other things of note that I passed on my way to ‘Sin City’ as I’ve heard it called – ooh edgy, was Nellis Airforce range (where Area 51 is supposedly) and a prison. It was quite a scary looking prison as well in the desert with lots of lookout towers and barbed wire. There was a sign on the road telling people not to pick up hitchhikers. To be honest if anyone did pick up a hitchhiker there then they would be a bit of an idiot in the first place as this prison was about 30 miles from anywhere. Then I arrived in Las Vegas. I have only seen the airport so far. It’s quite dull. I have been here for 2 hours and only have another 2 to go before Jenn’s delayed plane turns up. I have indulged in some fabulous people watching however. The dress and rears of some of the people here are quite spectacular. I have never seen anything quite like it. Las Vegas is full of the ‘bigger built’ person. It’s strange as I haven’t noticed many particularly large people up to now, but this is where they all are – at Las Vegas airport! I was admiring a particularly magnificent family wearing the most ill-fitting clothes, feeling rather smug that I was from England and had so much better taste, when I discovered they were also from the UK too. There was no mistaking that accent!! Again, my smugness thwarted at the first hurdle. It appears that it does not matter where you are from in this town, it must be the desert that makes people increase girth and dress dreadfully. God knows what I shall put on tomorrow when I wake up!
Distance travelled today – 115 miles.

Bearwatch – 0. But they probably have some in a reserve in one of the casinos here. They have everything else. Will investigate.
