Off the Road
From 2006 - Alaska in Skagway, United States on Jul 02 '06
Since the ship was all relaxation our adventures on land continued. This time it was off roading in a Jeep Wrangler 4 wheel drive. Since Skagways wasnt much different from Juneau, out trip was gonig to take us into Yukon, Canada.
We were gonig to be a caravan of 6 Wranglers, 4 in each jeep. So I had to share the driving pleasures with another guy, but the other couple was fun too. We didn't get to know them too well, but they were fun.
a trail that had been washed down at a couple of places
It was a 90 minute drive to out starting point, really pretty with lot of mountains and some spectacular lakes. I still remember a kid kept asking the name of the monutains from our guide on the two way radio, poor lady, she kept saying it was part of the range.
One one of the rest room stops, disaster stuck. As I excitedly jumped acorss a small hedge, I lost balance and twisted my foot, slightly badly. For the next 3 days I was destined to limp. I feared worse, but luck wasnt gonig to be so bad to me.
We reached the trail and brced our 4-wheelers to start the climb. This was a new experience, a beautiful drive into Canada some really spectacular views and then driving up a mountain. No, not on a road, thats nothing new, but on a trail that had been washed down at a couple of places. Our spines were aching by the time we got up and the mean just before the drive didin't help, but it was a great adventure. And the views from the top was awesome.
The return journey was less adventerous, but still pretty, it was afterall the same route. Once back at the ship we had lunch in the ship and a lazy day walking around the town, which really had nothing new. My foot was beginning to hurt, so we made our way back to the ship, to rest.
Then came the biggest event of our cruise. We got selected to be a part of the Love and Marrige game show. What we expected was a small show a few people would see was actually a huge event that almost the whole ship saw and for those few who missed it, it was re run many times on the TV network. For the rest of the trip we got a brief celebrity experience. People would talk to us in coridoors, some knew our names, other would just stop by to ask if we were the same two. It was fun for a day and then became a little irritating. But overall it was one of the things we will never forget.
