So much going on
From 2 Months in Europe in Bratislava, Slovakia on Jun 06 '08
I had already decided that i would like to see Bratislava and when I mentioned this to Melanie (a girl staying in the same dorm as me) she decieded to tag along, she'd been in Vienna for 4 days and was bored of visiting the numourous number of musuems that they have.
The train ride was quite short, only took ove 1 hour, and it was a half hour walk to the historic centre. When walking along the bridge we noticed a group of people that were looking up, we looked up as well as we wondered what they were looking at. We couldn't see anything so were were a bit confused. Until we noticed some guy suddenly jump off the tower and we thought he was going to crash right into us, but no his parahcute opened and he landed just a little bit to the back of us. It wasn't a long fall, so it all happened very quickly. Melanie recorded some footage which was very cool. We made our way finally to the centre and wandered around for a few hours. We saw strange statues, a man peeoping out of a manhole, a guy with a camera, all very strange. But apparently the most photogrpahed thing in Bratislave, now you think it would be the castle.
We tried to find a map, but there was no free one, and it wasnn't very comprehensive anyway. We could see the castle from where we were plus there were signs, vey helpful I must say and we made our own way there. Now before we do this we had lucnh at a restuarant next to where they were having some sort of festival in the crentre. I'm not sure what was happening, but there was music, from aboriginal groups and wannabe rock bands, stalls with things to buy from clothes to food, and men walkign around dressed in green, and women walking around dressed like queens and princesses, all very strange but very exciting at the same time.
Trying to get into the castle was fun. There were stairs everwhere, and you go up a case and that wouldn't lead to the grounds so you would try another one. I met this was really diificult back in the days, lol. The castle itself is closed at the moment as it's being renovated, but it was cool to look at, and the grounds were awesome. There was a really cool statue outside which was so different from the usual statues and monuments that you see out and about.
On the way back to the train station we walked through Bratislava Shopping Centre and there was an International Squash tournament going on. It was a women's game at that moment and it was France Vs England. England were winning when we left!! Yes that is amazing. Outside they had a climbing adventure type thing that you could do.
All in all, Bratislava seemed to be a really cool place. It's a kind of cross between Prague and Budapest, but less touristy, most of the people you actually here talking are locals. It of course does have it's own charm and is very different from those two cities, as well as being really cheap. Better go now before everyone else discovers it!!
