Heaven Amongst the Peaks!
From The Great Train Escape in Gimmelwald, Switzerland on Sep 05 '07
Got up at 4:50 to catch the first train out of Geneva to Interlaken to start our journey to the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald in the Swiss Alps, having caught that train (just about - twas such a struggle to get up !) we then got into Interlaken to get a connecting train to Lauterbrunnen, and then a bus to Stechelberg which is where you get the cable car up to the village of Gimmelwald at 1360 metres. Got to the Mountain Hostel across from the cable car station (connvenient :-) ) and were promptly put into the Honeymoon Suite, (one of only 2 rooms that are not dorms btw...) which was a little attic room located over the pool room / bar, it had an amazing view out of its little window across the mountains. Having arrived we decided what better way to get used to all the spectucular scenery was to take a 5.5 hour trek up the mountains to The Schilthorn (2970m) which is where the James Bond movie, On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) was filmed, little did we realise you really needed proper hiking boots to get up there ! 4.5 hours into the journey it gradually dawned on us that we would not be making it up there as by the time we had almost got to Birg which is some 2676 metres up the remaining trail was completely covered in snow which we would have needed hiking boots to continue, plus at that stage having been up since 5 and just spent nearly 5 hours hiking up a steep incline (and beginning to freak out a little as the last 3 to 4 hundred metres were very steep !) we were pretty flahhed... So we cheated a little and once we got to Birg we got the cable car across to the The Schilthorn...
...to be continued...and will add more pics
