Korean Engrish!
From Teaching English in South Korea! in Seoul, South Korea on Jul 18 '06
Anneong ha say yo everyone! Just a quick update..no exciting news unfortunately though! But we had a really relaxing weekend..rich tried to go birding..he was meant to go with Tim, but it rained all weekend. Yes, June is the rainy season..apparently in mid June we get a kind of monsoon season where it usually rains non-stop for 15 days or so. Most of the annual rain falls during this time. So, this Saturday, we have to do another 'park promotion' for Wonderland ..so HOLD THUMBS IT RAINS!!!!! Mrs Lee (the school director) has decided that the school is only half full, so she wants to try and get up to 300 students...which means she wants a promotion done once a month. We cannot imagine this school at double the capacity!!! But like they say, Koreans are really money mad! She gets about $600 a month per student, so u can imagine how much 'each student counts'! Well, as u all know the soccer world cup has started, so on Tuesday was Korea vs Togo. Koreans are VERY supportive of their team, so everyone was walking around with red tshirts saying 'lets go korea' and they had glowing devils horns on their heads cos the korean team is known as the 'Red Devils'. Luckily Korea won 2:1 to Togo, so we could hear the VERY LOUD celebrations at the local bars all night! Its amazing to see how much the matches mean to them, when they have absolutely zero chance of coming close to winning! They are very proud of their country! So this week was phone teaching, so we stayed at school late again - luckily this time we didnt have TOO many phones slammed down in our ears! Today (Friday) was clubact day here again..so Rich and I did 'The Hospital' theme again, once again giving the kids chocolate as their medicine!!! David got to make candy floss for his kids at 'SEVEN ELEVEN" and Michael got to make slush puppies for his Mcdonalds theme. Shame , this one kid burst into tears as soon as he heard the word hospital and even refused to come into the classroom, until we convinced him that he could color in a picture instead of getting 'medicine and a bandaid'! This week, Mrs Lee also decided that the classrooms needed to be decorated so that they looked more like 'english classrooms'. WHAT? EXTRA HOURS OF WORK for NO PAY! NO WAY! Even the Koreans put in as little effort as possible..like just sticking up a poster or 2 from a textbook!!! David even printed a couple of posters off the internet saying things like how kids must be more co-operative to their teachers!!! And they are now stuck up in the Wonderland Hall! Oh, I have to tell you about some of the BAD English we have come across here..like the one restuarant we went to had a 'RUNCH menu' instead of a LUNCH menu! Another place calls itself a 'Japanize' restaurant, and also a 'Japsnize' restaurant! At the subway terminal the sign says 'Tikets'! OH, and even in our very own Wonderland we have a 'faculity office' instead of a 'faculty' office and we have a 'Principle office' instead of a 'Principals office'. Oh, and rich saw this one guys tshirt - it said 'Adventure clothing for the GEAT outdoors!'! Oh and the best thing they say here is 'Grand open' not 'Grand openING'!Cant think of anymore right now, but we have seen so many examples! Anyway, I have to go now..2 more lessons then its the weekend..YAYY! Hope all of you guys in SA enjoyed the Comrades and your long weekend! Keep smiling and email soon! Lots of love, us! OK, so its Monday again-didnt get a chance to post this last email, so I'll just add to it! Well, I finally managed to get some rollerblades on Friday night! And luckily the weather this wknd was great! On Saturday, we did the promotion..and it didnt turn out too bad..except for the fact that it was boiling hot! And we managed to get a free lunch out of it too - from Mr Pizza!Pizzas here cost around R80 for a regular ..so at one pizza each (i.e. 4 of us), plus drinks, we managed to spend about R400!!!All at Wonderlands expense of course! Afterwards, I decided I HAD to try out my rollerblades, so I rollerbladed around the park, while Rich, David and Michael played some soccer. The park is really pretty..there is a lake in the middle with a huge fountain and a concrete path going all the way around for rollerblading/cycling etc. It was really fun - until I almost Rollerbladed right into the road - did I mention i dont know how to stop !!!! The next day (Sunday) Rich and I set off to a few department stores in Seoul - Rich wanted to find some Merrels (shoes), but we didnt manage to find any good pairs, so then we headed for the river that runs through Guri, so I could do some more rollerblading! All the rivers here are lined with cycle/ rollerblade paths...so I managed to rollerblade about 8 or 9 km along the river. There are also soccer fields, picnic places and even people fishing. The river is about 25 mins walk from our apartment, so I'll definitely be heading there again soon!..hopefully after work today! Well, no other news, sorry for such a boring mail..hopefully some exciting news next time! Hope u all enjoyed your long weekend! Who won the comrades?????!!!
