Only an hour in the air from LAX and I was in Phoenix, Arizona, the 5th most populous city in the U.S. (just ahead of Philadelphia.)

From my first impressions, Phoenix is a sprawling city.  Enroute to Los Angeles a week earlier, my plane had made a stop in Phoenix.  Approaching the airport, we had flown over Phoenix for a long time before touching down -- there was quite a lot of city down there.  Now I know why.

5th largest US city

Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) boasts 23 operating airlines using three large terminals, numbered 2,3, and 4.  (Terminal 1, considered modern when it was built in 1952, was demolished in 1990.)  On a typical day, the airport serves over 100 thousand passengers.
