IKEA makes a whole lot more sense to me now. Their products all have a direct connection to swedish life and culture.

check out the pictures i snapped wandering the city  during lulls in the blizzardly weather, you'll notice a lot of indoor shots too!

baby it's cold outside

The natural history museum was great. Their Imax theater was showing "Vikings" (so is Science World). and they boast the best taxidermy in the world.

A tree in the mall demonstrates how the swedes have a gift for beautiful and elegant design, never saw a tacky display so common in the malls of Canada...but there was one very perculiar window display I came across (see photos) at a clothing boutiqe.

Mmmmm, truffles. I took the picture after the kiosk closed, but returned the next day for a cheery ganache and 85% chocolate.

Jaywalking seems an acceptable offense here. I suppose because no one expects to wait long in the freezing cold.

Another noted differnce: Cigarette smoke actually smells pleasant here, kind of herbal and sweet.

Also saw Galma Stan (old town) which reminded me very much of Gastown, Vancouver with its shops like the hat shop, cafes and several touristy souvenier shops. The Ice Gallery was a 1 room museum that mimiced the experience in the Ice hotel and Bar.

Durjgarden is like Granville Island with a fair, open air museum (like Barkerville or Buraby's heritage museum), home to the Vasa museum (restored sunken ship from 1700's) and a kids museum based on the works of Astrid (Pipi-long-stockings author).  Just saw the giftshops of these places because i was cold and pressed for time.
