Robinson Crusoe Island
From Cruise Around the World in Robinson Crusoe, Chile on Feb 01 '07
2.2.2007
Today we anchored in Cumberland Bay and after our workout took a 5 minute tender ride to Robinson Crusoe Island. It was the tale of the Scottish sailor who was marooned on this tiny island for four years in 1651 that inspired Daniel Defoe to write his adventure novel, Robinson Crusoe. Today the island has 500 inhabitants and belongs to Chile. It’s a very mountainos island and we didn’t stay long. Came back to the ship for lunch, bridge, bingo and reading. Everynight we meet the West’s for cocktails at 6:30 and usally have someone join us. Last night it was our newest friend, Isle Smith from Pensacola.Originally from Germany, she once lived in Bethesda, has been widowed three times and is 97 years old and is on for the whole trip. She now has over 500 days on Silverseas and is known and loved by the crew. She is remarkable, attractive and entertaining. By the way, we have met another couple, Michael and Stuart Moore from Amelia Island and knows my college classmate ,Bob Adelman. Believe it or not , Mike Moore had a three way heart by-pass operation done three weeks before this trip while on a sking trip to Colorada. They are also on for the entire 126 days and he is no longer pulling around an oxygen bottle as he did the first week. Last night we had dinner with a couple from St.Louis and Amelia Island, the Knotts. Michael is a Princeton grad as is their 22 yr old son-so he and Donny had a lot to talk about. His attractive wife is a physician who showed interest in Joanne when she wasn’t feeling well at the beginning of the trip.
Enough for today. We hope for all of our family and friends at home are well.
