Budapest
From Hungary in Budapest, Hungary on Aug 06 '07
We got completly lost while trying to find the hostel we had reserved beds in. It wasn`t really our fault, the directions were wrong.
As soon as we found it and checked in, we headed into town to find our bearings and have a little explore. We decided to book a walking tour for the next morning, and then after seeing the Chemical Brothers were playing at the Sziget festival there, we decided to by a day ticket for that day (9th).
Budapest Big Beats!
After alot of walking on the first day, we grabbed a meal in a nice street and the got back to hit the sack, ready for a reasonably early wake up.
The walking tour turned out to be extremely good. Walking, it definitly was aswell. We went around for nearly five hours, with not much rest. We did cover alot of the center of town, and learnt some interesting history. Apparently they say there undergound is the oldest in Europe. They say this, as the joke is that as the UK abstains from the EU as much as possible, then they don`t consider it in Europe. Otherwise, obviously the London Undergound would beat it on that front.
After the tour I spent the rest of the day by myself, catching up on emails and things, plus trying to sort out where I was going next and how. Seems that Croatia, my next location, is popular this time of year. So getting hostels anywhere is an effort.
The next day, I lay in a bit that morning. Once I got up I went to see the Basilica cathedral, which was very spectacular I have to day. Probably the best I`ve seen so far, as the Segrado Familia was still a work in progress. I also went to the Hungarian history museam to bone up on my Hungarian history, again all very interesting.
That night was, for me, the main event here though. I met the others, then we got to the festival (which is on a small island on the Danube) to immediatly be rain on. We took refuge in the chill out tent, which was playing some chilled out electronic stuff, and had people just lying all over the place, mostly high I would`ve imagined.
We looked around for a bit, before deciding to stay in the main stage arena. We saw a few random bands, then "The Good, the Bad & the Queen" played, who were good, so fair play to this Damon Albarn formed supergroup. They were, however, a bit too chilled to be on before a crowd out to see some God`s of Electronic Big Beat.
THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS were simply INCREDIBLE!
I´ll leave this one there, as the rest was only getting back to the hostel and myself having to wake up early, hungover, to get a train to Zagreb.
