Vilnius another old /new city Day 4
From Day 3 Warsaw in Vilnius, Lithuania on Jul 17 '07
Vilnius was a pretty city with much to recommend it to a day or twos sight seeing. Lots of historical monuments and churches plenty to photograph and look at. The people in the reconstructed old part of the city were obviously enjoying new wealth after release from soviet rule. Much of the old town has been reconstructed and gives a picture perfect view. Lots of expensive cars and hotels give a Italian continental feel to the place.
We took a tour bus around the whole of the city which I am discovering is an excellent way to find your way around. We were on a very tight schedule, leaving at around 6.00 am the next day. That having been said I was determined to cram as much in as possible.
The real highlight of the tour was the Church of St Peter and St Paul
The main square was huge and loads of tourists were milling around taking photos. To one side of the square was a massive cathedral, on one side was the main road. It was from there we picked up our "Sunshine Bus" this was a really naff yellow bus, open decked and painted bright yellow. I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised. The commentary was in a thick local accent but English language. We went to just about every site of interest in the city including the out of town modern developments. This put the history of the old part of town into context and showed me how the average person lives in Vilnius.

The real highlight of the tour was the Church of St Peter and St Paul. This was a nice looking church on the outside but inside the most amazing stucco work dazzled all who went in.
Tomorrow we go on the 7.07 am train from Vilnius to Riga in Latvia. This is a sleeper train on its way up the Ukrane so look forward to another smelly lumpy ride.
