Munich
From European tour in Munich, Germany on Jun 02 '07
Well after a few days of constantly moving, I was looking forward to a few days in the same place. Luckily Munich was also one of the places I was really looking forward to seeing. It didn't disappoint.
Well, what can you say about Munich. Every place you go to seems to have someone selling sausages and beer. How can you not enjoy that.
First day I basically had enough time to get into town (without too much trouble this time) and book a hotel. Managed to get a really cool room in the Theatre Hotel. The place has a heap of character and even a bumbling, confused attendant. Viviane happened to be on holidays in Munich this week, so it turns out that I have a tourist buddy for the week. Which is brilliant. Had a few drinks with Viviane and a friend and then that was Sunday done.
Monday was spent just wandering around the inner city area checking out all of the main inner city area and finding some accomodation for the next 4 days. Managed to find a nice hotel really close to Marienplatz. After moving hotels met up with Viviane and had some dinner in outside in Karlsplatz before finding a bar for a bit.
Well Tuesday was always going to be interesting, got the culural part of my visit out of the way by visiting the Alte Pinakothek, really wanted to see the Neue but it was shut on Tuesdays. It wasn't bad, even found a few peices I recognised. On the way back I managed to stumble across the remains of some of the main Nazi buildings. I didn't really connect that a lot of what you see in the history books until I saw the evidence.
After the cultural section of my Munich visit it was time to try out what most of the visitors come to Munich for, Beer. Met up with Viviane and got some lunch and a beer. Went up the tower in the Frauenkirchethen, went for a walk through hofgarten then into the Englischer Garden. Where, that's right, there was a beer garden and some more beer. This in hindsight wasn't the smartest thing to do as at 6pm I had a beer tour.
The beer tour was really good, had a great group of people and after all the slow history stuff, a bit of tasting and eating, the group ended up in the hofbräuhäus. After a couple of Mas (no idea if i've spelt that right, it's a litre of beer) and going to a few other places I don't really remember, somehow managed to find my room and woke up lunchtime the next day with a very bad hangover.
Well, wednesday was obviously short, but i managed to drag myself out of bed and meet up with Viviane and her friends Markus and Jill. Took off on a bike tour of the city for the afternoon with an audioguide and of course the Markus guide of the not so normal facts about the city. This was heaps of fun but unfortately didn't manage to run over any American tourists. Had another sausage and then went back to the hotel watched some Knight Rider and Baywatch in German and then went to sleep.
Thursday, Markus decided to play hiking guide and musical maestro (dancing naked under the palm trees??)and take the group hiking in Austria. This was absolutely beautiful, but I won't try and explain you'll just have to see the photo's. Suffice to say the veiw was amazing. After dropping into Markus's parents weekend apartment, one of those Austrian houses that you see on the tourist ad's.
Had a really great day and then ended it by having drinks at the Hofbräu Kellär, followed by a coktail bar and some pizza at 2:30 from somewhere i don't really remember. All in all a good way to finish.
Next day was up at 8 (had to pay for parking), finally bought a GPS, which immediately made me love it by finding Allianz Stadium and then got me out of town.
