So, our trip started out with a bit of a delay. It all started on the runway right before we were about to take off when the pilot informed the passengers, "We are experiencing some mechanical problems and we are trying to solve the issue." This did not make for very happy passengers.....No one wanted to fly on this plane anymore. After a while the airline decided it would be best to switch planes......however, once we left the plane we only moved 3 gates down making many doubt whether or not we were really getting a new airplane! We were supposed to depart LAX at 1:55 pm and instead we did not leave the airport until 5:45 pm causing us to miss our connection in Miami. The silver lining on this cloud was that we got a free night at the Wyndham Hotel with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included! The next day we took a bus to Miami Beach and walked on the sand from there to South Beach and back! Sorry John....we did not spot any beach babes! Both the water and the air were about the same temperature, hot! We saw lots of washed up coral bits, jelly fish, and even a sponge (as in sponge bob, not trash).

Along our walk we came across a man on an outing with his two pet macaws. We chatted with him a while and had great time observing these amazing birds. Most likely this will be as close as we´ll ever get to a macaw since their natural habitat in the Brazilian Amazon is rapidly being destroyed. According to the owner of the birds, Ecotourism is playing a big role in bringing their numbers back and this is definitely good news. He mentioned that farmers in the Amazon are planting palm trees so as to attract macaws. The cows in these farms eat the palm nuts, but are only able to digest the soft exterior shell, thus leaving behind the nut for the macaws to eat.

We are now, finally, in Brazil......in Sao Paulo. Our plans changed a bit, and we will be staying here (at Paulo´s house, Andre´s uncle) until the 9th exploring different parts of the state of Sao Paulo. On the 9th we fly to Manaus, our original starting point. Stay tuned for our blog about our stay in the beautiful state of Sao Paulo!

Português: "Ninguém quer mais voar neste avião"

Nossa viagem começou com um pouco de atraso. Tudo começou no aeroporto, pouco antes de decolarmos quando o piloto informou os passageiros: "Estamos tendo alguns problemas mecânicos mas estamos tentando resolvê-lo". Os passageiros não ficaram muito felizes... Depois de um tempo, a empresa decidiu que seria melhor trocar de avião... mas, depois que saímos do avião passamos por apenas 3 portões, trazendo dúvidas se estávamos ou não pegando um outro avião. Era pra sairmos do aeroporto LAX às 13:55, e ao invés disso, não saímos do aeroporto antes de 17:45 o que nos fez perder nossa conexão em Miami. A parte boa foi que ganhamos uma noite de graça no Hotel Wyndham com café-da-manhã, almoço e jantar incluídos! No dia seguinte, pegamos um ônibus para Miami Beach e andamos na areia de lá até South Beach e voltamos. Desculpe, John... não avistamos nenhuma gatinha! A água e o ar estavam quase na mesma temperatura, quentes! Vimos muitos corais, águas-vivas e até uma esponja (como o Bob Esponja, e não esponja no lixo).

Durante nossa caminhada, passamos por um homem passeando com suas duas araras de estimação. Conversamos com ele um tempo e nos divertimos vendo aqueles pássaros maravilhosos. Provavelmente, esse será o mais perto que chegaremos de uma arara, já que seu habitat natural na Floresta Amazônica está sendo rapidamente destruída. De acordo com o dono dos pássaros, o ecoturismo está fazendo um importante papel em aumentar a população deles, o que certamente é uma boa notícia. Ele mencionou que fazendeiros da Amazônia estão plantando palmeiras para atrair as araras. O gado dessas fazendas comem as 'nozes', mas só conseguem digerir a casca macia, deixando o caroço para as araras comerem.

Agora estamos, finalmente, no Brasil... em São Paulo. Nossos planos mudaram um pouco, e nós vamos ficar aqui (na casa de Paulo) até o dia 9, explorando diferentes partes do estado de São Paulo.
