Delicious

I was thinking about the food I eat here and the food I eat at home and I thought it would be good for me to keep a record of the different foods I eat here, to look back upon. So for one week I'm going to keep a record of everything I eat and if it's appetizing enough post a picture!

for one week I'm going to keep a record of everything I eat

Groceries: The main difference between foods here and at home is the choice in the stores. The food stores here, normally called the "Chinese" because they are run by Chinese people, are the source of most of the food that can't be bought fresh at the market, things like chicken, cereals, soup, bread and tinned goods. Most of the food stocked in the Chinese Stores is made in Belize (for example in Spanish Lookout where the majority of dairy produce comes from) or is imported from America (things like Oreo cookies and Betty Crocker Cake mix) The choice here is pretty slim, for example at home there is an aisle for cereals, here there are about 5 cereals to choose from. But generally you can find everything you need.

Bakeries: There are also two bakeries in town that I can think of, probably more. There is the French bakery and the German bakery. The French bakery sells baguettes, sour dough bread, garlic bread, pastries and lots of yummy cakes, my favorites are the one dollar lemon pies (what we would call lemon meringue pies, the size of a jam tart) I get most of my baked goods from a lady called Tonie who is an expat who bakes the most delicious food, she makes delicious jalapeno and cheese bread.

The Market: One of my favorite places to buy food… full of fresh vegetables and fruit

Day One

Breakfast: Yogurt (strawberry and banana- the yogurts here are expensive so I normally only have one as a treat!), Fresh Watermelon, Fresh Orange (Brought from the market yesterday)

Lunch: Cheese and Tomato Sandwich- The bread that I buy here in the Chinese is different to the bread at home, it's very very light and has a sweet kind of taste to it, it's nice though. The cheese here is mostly processed, you can buy cheddar and mozzarella but it costs around 7BZD whereas processed cheese (that tastes like dairylea) is much cheaper at about 2BZD Tomatoes brought from the market mmmm and of course finished of with Marie Sharp hot sauce

Dinner: White Rice, Salad (Sliced pear (avocado), lettuce and tomatoes, all tossed in fresh lime juice and cilantro (coriander), Vegetables in ginger and honey sauce. The vegetables are all bought from the market and we used fresh root ginger, okra (I don't know if that is spelt right as I have never eaten it at home! Green kind of bean which is kind of slimy!), squash, tomatoes, onion and carrot. The honey is brought from the market and is sold in old bottles so I guess it is produced locally. All finished off with watermelon for pudding

Day Two

Breakfast: Sweetbread, which is as it sounds…. Bread that is sweet!

Lunch: Scrambled egg sandwich (not very different to in England!)

Dinner: Chicken Stew, I'll have to get the recipe from Devon… it was absolutely delicious, that boy can cook! It had chicken cuts (seasoned) okra, potato, onion, carrots, cilantro and yummy sauce. For pudding he bought me a Choc-Ice which was slightly different to at home where a choc ice is ice cream covered in chocolate, this was literally milk frozen covered in chocolate mmmmm and because I am greedy, a kitkat (no wonder I look pregnant!!)

Day Three

Breakfast: Coffee

Lunch: Peanut butter (homemade fresh from the market) and Jam sandwich on the nicest white bread from the French Bakery

Dinner: Belizean BBQ Chicken, chicken leg in a BBQ marinade from the grill, served with baked beans, sweetcorn and peas, accompanied with the usual flour tortilla and lime juice
