So I checked into a nice hotel across a bridge from the beach, and it has a pool. My room is about $65/night, and it is BEAUTIFUL. I have an ocean facing balcony, a king size bed, a TV, and best of all, A/C. So the first day I lay by the pool and read. Then I started my very very mean antibiotics. So here is what I have done:

read, shivered, watched movies, took tylenol, sweated out the fever, started another fever, watched another movie, figured out who the killer was 30 minutes before the movie character did, read, slept, tried to eat so I can keep my meds down, and watched a documentary on the Hindenburg.

This is not to say I'm getting sicker. I called the doctor and he said that I'm getting the "1% of people get these side effects" of course it's me. So I'm going to stay at this hotel until I'm done with the meds (even though it's expensive) because I don't think I want to throw up on a bus. So things are ok, I'm gonna go force myself to shower and then hop in bed with my book!

Sorry I haven't updated this, and thanks to all of you who have been so concerned about me. So here is what's going on in a nutshell. I was taken off the cipro because clearly it didn't like me. I was put on something else which I also had a weird reaction to. So I just went back to the hospital, and he's trying me on one more thing. I have to go back tomorrow. If it doesn't work I either have to check into the hospital here or fly home. I've also had a major problem with my plane tickets, so I am going to have to buy a whole new flight from Singapore to Australia. Awesome. So I'm going to try to force myself to eat something and then go back to bed. I will let people know if something is really wrong. Miss you all.

Wonderful news all - I have been cleared to leave! I am going to go to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow (I hope... no ticket yet) and even though I have no plane tickets onward at the moment, I don't care because we found an antibiotic that doesnt hate me! Success! So yes. I'm fine, I have a few more days of meds, but tomorrow I'm heading for the bus station! WOOHOOO!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you take care of strep infection. I got one in a neck gland in 1997. I had periodic fevers for several weeks and then ended up in hospital and on intravenous antibiotics for 4 weeks. Doctor said I would have died if I hadn't gotten treatment. You need to make sure that you take care of this.

oh my god, i hate being sick in a foreign country. i got so sick in mexico, with a flu, not mexico's fault, that for many months, you could not say the word 'mexico' to me...or any word beginning with M, for that matter, so horrible was the experience. there was a cute mexican doctor, tho... hope you are better! love dewie

lize, ditto to what bill says. not to be taken lightly even if you seem to be getting better. i think you should get a culture to find out for sure what the infection is and make sure it is getting better. but i'm so glad you are feeling better. had me really worried there! love you

Regarding your mom's comment about getting a culture. I got a culture done after I started taking antibiotics orally in Jordan. As a result, Georgetown Hospital could never find anything in the culture, despite drilling several holes in my neck. It still took several week of antibiotics before I was fully recovered. Those strep infections are nasty. Medical care in KL should be good. Singapore is another place with fine care.
