From Banff we flew to Toronto, a bit of a long day, but a little quicker (and cheaper) than spending three days on the bus getting there!
Toronto is quite similar to Vancouver, although a lot colder. It’s also a little less attractive at the moment, as there has been a large amount of snow, which sits in big brown piles at the side of the road!
The next day was beautiful and sunny, so we decided to go up the CN Tower. It turned out we picked the right day to go, as the next few days saw pretty bad weather, and the view from the top wouldn’t have been very good. We timed the visit just right – we got to the top in daylight (just), watched the sun go down, and got the view at night too.

The view from the top of the tallest tower in the world is quite spectacular – Toronto and the surrounding area are quite flat, so the view goes on for miles and miles. There’s also a glass floored area so that you can see straight down the side of the tower, which was a little unnerving!
We also visited Fort York, the British military camp which was the founding settlement of York (which later became Toronto). The fort was actually destroyed by the Americans during an attempt to claim the land from the British, and was then rebuilt slightly to the east of it’s former location. When York began to build up, the fort was re-sited to its current location.

Toronto has some really cool architecture so we spent a morning wondering around the city, including the historic distillery district, which has been left as it was, but with boutique shops instead of breweries!
Talking of breweries, we also visited the Steam Whistle Brewery for a tour. The tour was quite interesting but the highlight was the large amount of free beer!!
Next stop: Niagara
