Heading to San Jose up on Lago Peten Itza today.  Not much to write about - but am not sure if I will have internet at all for the next week.  If the school has internet, then yes, but if not, San Pedro is not very touristy, so therefore I doubt there will be much in the way of internet cafes.

Finca Ixobel has been okay.  It is really gorgeous!  Some cooling off in the pond, reading, sitting around, playing ping pong, and meeting some really crazy people who have had some interesting adventures.  Realized that I am, perhaps, the ONLY "1" on the enneagram in this whole country - or at least up in the jungle-y part of the country.  :)

100 Years of Solitude

Opted out of the cave trips when I learned 1) that there are terrantulas (sp??) in the caves and 2) that you have to walk/swim in the water in the caves for part of it.  Sounded neither fun nor relaxing.

The book I ended up buying in Antigua is 100 Years of Solitude.  Seems appropriate!  I am not enjoying it very much - but it is something to do.  Anyone read it?  One problem I am having is that all of the characters (which up to this point is about 50) have the same names!  I needed to have made a diagram of who is who from the beginning - at this point I'm almost lost and am considering starting over.

Becky, I once tried to read 100 Years, too (after learning it was Ricky Martin's favorite book - seriously). Too hard for me. But a friend JUST this week was telling me that she's reading it, and the way she is managing is by realizing that she won't ever get it straight who's who, but is just focusing on enjoying the prose and the settings. Maybe too blatantly a metaphor for life, but it made me want to pick the book up again! Good luck - We miss you here! Melody

Hi Becky! I read the book quite a few years back for book club. It didn't really do much for me either, though it seems to be one of those books that everyone should have the experience of reading. I mean, come on...it's on Oprah's Book Club list! It doesn't get any better than that! (note the sarcasm) Maybe you are just a bit too o.d.'ed on both solitude and Spanish to read the book right now. Anyhow, happy travels. I can't believe you are over half way done with your trip! Kylie
