Museums
From Pura Vida en Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica on Jun 22 '06
One morning I woke up extremely early and took a bus with the group to San Jose to do some museum hopping. After a bit of a drive and our tour guide rattling off for a half hour, we arrived, the country’s capital. We parked the bus, walked through a few squares, and took notice of a few buildings of importance. We slowly made our way to the Museum of Natural History. Lot’s of cool stuff, mainly focused on the indigenous people that once lived in Costa Rica. There were also these perfectly spherical stones placed in front of the museum, and apparently, hundreds of these were found a while back in the south of Costa Rica. Weird.
The next stop on our trip to the capital was the Museum of Gold. It had a vast collection of jewelry, articulately sculpted out of pure gold by the indigenous people. Really interesting pieces; lots of turtles, scorpions, and other crazy creatures they imagined up.

After the museums we had about an hour to grab lunch and check out some of the city. San Jose was crazy. Lot’s of people, vendors, dirt, and powerful vibes. There was a ton of graffiti, most with political commentary. One read, TLC = neo-esclavitud, which in English means new-slavery. There were random quotes from Gandhi and Martin Luther King, all in Spanish. Heavy stuff. I stopped at a pastry vendor and bought a delicious éclair. The best part about being in San Jose was just the people watching. There were so many differences in each person, yet they all seemed to have the same thread running through them. A great city.
