Udine - Day 2

Second day in Udine and this morning the weather looks almost viable. After breakfast, we headed out to a climbing area called Prosecco (yes, like the sparkling wine). Lugging all of our gear, it was a steep and slippery hike to the crag. Upon arrival the routes looked awesome. They were all bolted but some were impossible! From where we were, we had an incredible view of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea. We selected a climb that looked reasonable and started gearing up. Just as we were all ready to go, it started to rain again. Not much but enough to put a halt to our attempt. We took cover under a 25 meter high overhang where some of the impossible climbs started. We assessed the sky but it didn't look good. We decided to wait for an hour or so along with two other climbers.

After a few aborted attempts, it was clear the weather was not going to cooperate. We packed up our gear and headed down an even slippery slope because of the rain. Disheartened, we headed back to Udine. Rinaldo knew of another climbing gym on our way so we decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it was closed. Apparently, alot of gyms here close over the summer because everyone is climbing outdoor.

Just as we were all ready to go, it started to rain again

Back at home base, we had a late lunch then Rinaldo decided we should watch some old movies. It started with "The Blues Brothers" then shifted to the original "Mash" movie and I took a nap because I'm still struggling a bit with this cold.

We all went out for dinner to a local ristorante. Rinaldo's sister Betty and her friend Anna joined us. I've known Betty since she lived in Vancouver for a year when she was sixteen. It's always fun to see her again. Her friend Anna is a translator and speaks 4 or 5 languages. Some of us had the local specialty called Frico. This arrives at the table looking like a half inflated balloon about 8 inches across. It is actually composed of cheese and is quite delicious!

Back home, we had a glass of grappa and headed off to sleep hoping by some miracle, the weather will give us a break. Not looking good though....
