Punta del Diablo was truly a special place and very different from Punta del Este. It is located just a few hours east of Punta del Este but getting there felt like we were on the other side of the world. The village of Punta del Diablo boasts a population of about 300 permanent people.  All others are tourists from Argentina, other Uruguayns, and a scattering of others. We rented an apartment with some newly made friends from Sweden and Australia and paid a grand total of $25 for the use of this two floor apartment with a balcony facing the beach.  I could have stayed there much longer!!! The beach goes on for miles and is covered in really fine, whitish sand. There were no real waves to speak of and the water was cooler than I would have expected. We did some horse riding not on the beach but almost always with it within sight. The cool part was we took the horses and did not even need a guide - so pretty much you are free to do whatever you want!!! We ended up going of the beaten track into fairly impenetrable bushes and valleys and had to turn back. The freedom was awesome!
