The Habsburgs settled in Vienna in 1278 and made it the capital of the Austrian empire. The city flourished under their strong leadership, despite being dragged into various European conflicts and withstanding attcks by the Turks in 1529 and 1683. Vienna's golden years as the cultural centre of Europe were the 18th and 19th centuries. Musically, there was only one place to be during this period. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, and Schubert are some of the great composeres who made Vienna their home. Anybody with an interest in the arts will love this city.
Ok so I copied that directly from the lonely planet book of central Europe page 76--did you actually think I could write that well--you read the rest of my entries!
Vienna is a beautiful city. We are planning on seeing the Vienna boy's choir tommorrow. The only problem is that the sing at 9:30 and we never get up that early. So we will see. But we have spent some time here walking around and looking at the amazing architure. There is the most amazing church in the city center--can't think of the name of it right now.
Today we did what we said we would never do again--we bought a 4 hour tour trip of the city. After 2 hours we couldn't take it anymore and we decided to escape from the group and cut our losses. The trip was offered in 5 languages. So that means that at every stop the guide will say the same thing in all 5 languages. Most of the time we stood there listening other languages then we she started to speak ours everyone else was talking so loud that we couldn't hear. Then we got on a cruise ship down the Danube river. It really sucked. Everyone was smoking, we couldn't hear anything and we were either stuck next to the stinky group, the loud Spanish speaking group, or the poorly behaved dancing and toy throwing children.
After we broke free from the group we decided to hang out in the middle of the city center. We had a great time drinking beer and watching the street performers.
New Day=== So we decided to stay here one more day. Mostly because Marty thought he could see the Colts play at the Marriott sports bar. Which didn't end up happening. So now we are at the internet cafe and he is listening to the game.
Well we actually got up in time for the boy's choir! We couldn't believe it. It was only because the room we were staying in was right next to the breakfast room and the early birds woke us up. So we rushed over to see them only to find out that they were not singing this week. But they were selling everyone tickets to a horse riding show--since Marty is horribly allergic to horses we decided to go see the palace. It reminded me alot of the Biltmore house in Ashville North Carolina.
