Ahh, the mountain of Colorado...
From Ahh, the mountain of Colorado... in Zurich, Switzerland on Oct 19 '02
...I mean Switzerland. Great to be in the mountains again. We even had a few inches of snow on the ground one morning. But, like Colorado, it was melted by the afternoon. The Swiss Alps are actually quite different from the Rockies -- towns are built on steep hills rather than valley floors and cliff-faced peaks appear more prominent.
We made our way to the tiny town of Gimmerwald and stayed there for a relaxing three days. Most of the tourist places had shut down and we found one of the last places to stay. Turns out, the town is a top recommendation of the guidebook and PBS show travel guru, Rick Steves. The place had more tourbook toting ditto heads than we would like to admit. Spent a few days hiking around the area and enjoying the sound of the cow bells everywhere.
The language here is wild. It is mostly German with a thick dialect and a splattering of Italian and French words. So...
