After a few bruises from Mt Hutt we took a Lazy day and headed further down the East Coast to Oamaru.

After checking into our hostel we checked out NZ not most happening town, I am sure there is a curfew here at 9:00 because everything closed except for one Pub.

..standing a whole 30cm tall...

We did however get the opportunity to see the Oamaru world famous blue tipped penguins. They are the world’s smallest penguins standing a whole 30cm tall. The viewing setup did compensate quite well for the penguin size. The viewing area was only 5 meters from where the penguins come out of the water on to the stoney beach. The first thing that catches your attention is how social they are, at the top of the beach they gather together in groups of 10 for safety before crossing a dirt track to their cliff side homes.

Unfortunately  we were not allow take photo’s. but they look like this.
