In which 2 become 5. (Much like the Spice girls song).
From 'Finding myself' in Dunedin, New Zealand on Nov 11 '08
We arrived in Duneden as a 5. Me, Pavey and the 3 previously mentioned girls. Obviously the first thing to tick off the list was the chocolate factory. So before finding a hostel we decided to go there. Its a Cadburies one so in theory it should have been really good (we've all been to Birmingham and lets be honest its great).
Upon entering the door the factory in Duneden seems to have exactly the same magic as there is a huge pile of Crunchies against the wall with fake people popping out (They look like they are meant to be workers, but if they were they would be serverly slacking). Anyway, I try to steal one of these Crunchies and find out that they are actually just wooden blocks wrapped in Crunchie wrappers. And that is kind of what the rest of the tour is like. On the outside its sounds magical, just like the wrapper, but on the inside the workers and the process of actually making the chocolate is boring, just like the block of wood.
Chocolate factory, Brewary, swimming pools and steep hills. Well done Duneden, what a wide variety you offer.
We saw a lady mopping the floor and someone on a production line. The reality of working in a chocolate factory is not as same as the fantasy I think we all had in our minds before we turned up. What made it a bit worse was that we couldn't hear what the tour guide was saying and the depressing potential that he may have been a peodophile.
On the flipside it did have a 15000litre chocolate waterfall. Very impressive! However when someone asked what it did the answer was 'rotate'. So ultimately useless. Still cool though.
That night we relaxed after a heavey few nights in Queenstown (although the girls managed to keep drinking wine in the room. Obviously).
The day after we visited 'The steepest street in the world!!!!' See now again in concept this sounds exciting. The reality is that it is exactly that. It is a steep street. In New Zealand, a land full of mountains and hills, the steepest 'street' just doesn't compare. We took photos there though next to the sign. Becasue that is what its there for. That is what I imagine lots of people do. After that though the girls gave me and Pavey a lift to an outdoor pool next to the sea. That was alot more fun! It was a saltwater heated pool in which we played like the little cheeky bastards we are!
The others met us this day ready for a night out. Which proved to be entertaining as there were quite a few of us, but the bar itself was dead. A good night though. Also the others seemed to have had a good couple of nights on the island which is nice.
The morning after we all met up and dossed about a bit, preparing for our next tour. The Speights Brewary tour! This was much better, we had a mad tour guide who was cracking (albiet crap) jokes all over the place. We got shown around teh factory and around a sort of history of the beer. Then we had a tasting session which involved 6 pumps, a glass each and half an hour to drink as much as we liked. This sounds awesome and it was but its odd being told to drink as much as you can/like in half and hour when you are already quite hungover. We managed though!
Again that night we had a night out to say bye to the people we had met and then, in the morning we piled into the car (the original 5 back together) and drove to a little bay nearby becasue we had heard rumours that there could be sea lions there. And there were! Apparantly its a place that isn't mentioned in the Lonely Planet so loads of people don't turn up (which makes me beleive that I have truely become a traveller now, just like in the films!) Anyway, more to the point we got very close to wild sea lions resting on a beach and they are big bastards! They pretty much just walk around starting fights with each other, I guess its similar to what school used to be like. Also they occassionally start fights with Jake. And Jake runs away. Again similar to school, Ha!
Then we all drove off again, this time to 'Mount Doom' from Lord of the Rings. (Or mount cook if you prefer).
