Dead Sea
From Cyprus and many other European Countries! in Dead Sea, Jordan on Mar 01 '08
The Dead Sea is a beautiful, wonderful place and is 1,312 feet below sea level. THE LOWEST PLACE ON EARTH. We went to the Dead sea after we visited Jerash earlier that morning. The Dead Sea receives water from a number of rivers, including the River Jordan. Once the waters reach the Dead Sea they are landlocked and have nowhere to go, so they evaporate, leaving behind a dense, rich mix of salts and minerals that supply industry, agriculture and medicine with someof it's finest products. The Dead Sea is flanked by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west (which we could see and took pictures of). The area is believed to have been home to five Biblical cities: Sodom, Gomorrah, Adman, Zebouin and Zoar.
The Dead Sea area has a lot of spiritual significance. This is the place where God first spoke to man, where Job suffered and was rewarded for his faith, where Jesus was baptized by John and where Jacob wrestled with the angel of God. Also, in the book of Genesis, God refers to the Jordan River Valley around the dead sea as the "Garden of the Lord" and it is believed to be the location of the Garden of Eden.
The Dead Sea is warm and soothing and has salt water that is ten times saltier than regular sea water. We experienced the luxury of coating ourselves with the Dead Sea's rich, black, stimulating mud and floated effortlessly on our backs while soaking up the water's healthy minerals along with the gently diffused rays of the Jordanian sun. The Dead Sea is the safest place in the world to sunbathe. The vapour that rises from the continuously evaporating surface of the sea, acts as a natural filter for potentially harmful rays. Floating in the Dead Sea is by far one of the coolest things I have EVER done.
We had an absolute blast putting mud all over ourselves and swimming/floating in the dead sea. I also bought some mud and dead sea salts to bring home! yay!!!
