Pyramids & Sphinx
From Egypt 2005 in Cairo, Egypt on Nov 22 '05
Got up at 1.20am to get a coach tour into Cairo from Hurghada, this is miles and miles and hours and hours... Firstly we go round all the hotels and pickup other guests then head out to the edge of the desert where we about anothere 100 tour buses all meet up and head off accross the desert in one huge convoy. The meetup takes forever and its geting on in the day before we even start.
The coach journey takes 9 hrs and we finally get to The Pyramids after a long drive and messing about picking up the tour guide and changing drivers etc in Cairo itself. As we congregate atthe front of the Pyramids, breath taken by the spectacle before us and itching to go explore, the tour guide finishes blaing on and says "ok back at the bus in 15 minutes".... Ahhh I could have cried. We race off to the Great Pyramid, the sheer size of one brick alone is astounding, they are just huge. Desperatley try and take photos without getting the old egyptian chap in any shots as he needs paying for the privelege haha! Back to the bus now and onto the next. Next Pyramid... yes 15 minutes...
its fascinating and spine tingling
Again only 15 minutes, running along now in the sand in about 33c to the smaller pyramid which you can climb up the front steps to and go down a tunnel inside to the tombs, this is amazing the stuffy little tunnel is so close and hot but its worth the hyperventilation. Times up now, back to the bus again. A 9 hour journey for 45mins at the Pyramids is very down heartening.
Now onto the Sphinx. This statue is amazing, its huge and has the Pyramids as a backdrop, which is great especially for photos. We get about 20 mins here to wander round and soak up the atmosphere, the Sphinx has one eye carved out to make it blind, according to Egyptian history.
Out onto a river boat now for lunch at a nice hotel on the other side of the river. Before heading to the Museum, this place is absolutely fantastic, its huge too. To do it properly you'll need a full day, there's just so much to see. Typical tour style we get an hour, Obviously head straight for Tutankhamun room, all the artifacts and treasures from the tomb in Luxor are here, including the coffins and the famous gold mask, this is breathtaking, its so beautiful all i can do is stare in awe. Then off to Mummy room, this is eerie, there is mummified everything in this room, the teeth and hair is still in tact on many of the corpses, its fascinating and spine tingling.
Now all thats left is the long journey home... not in convoy though and not 9hrs!
