How can I get there from here?
From Walking the Pacific Coast in Pacific Beach, United States on Jan 11 '08
I wake up at 8:30am...that appears to be a pattern with me. I go to Kona's for breakfast. Yesterday, it was IHOP chocolate chip pancakes, today it is 2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices of wheat toast, toast and some cheesy potatoes for $4.85. I miss getting on the #30 bus by 100 feet. I don't think anything of it, until I realize it is Saturday and the buses don't run as frequently. When we get to Old Town Transit Center, I miss getting on the Coaster (Amtrak) by 10 seconds. I do a stupid thing: I immediately buy a train ticket for the next train and then realize it is at 2:24pm. What? How can I take a train that late, walk 11 miles and be back before dark? I can't. I decide to waste time at the public library, but the line for internet access is too long. I go to Trader Joes and get chocolate covered edamame, orange juice, oranges, and tomatoes. I walk back to the hostel to put these things away, and then I rush back to the bus stop to catch the 2:05pm bus. The bus is running 15 minutes behind schedule and the train left early at 2:10pm. I missed it again and I am out the train fare. Oh, well it is only $5. But, crap...tomorrow is Sunday and there are no trains on Sunday. What? I take the bus back to Mission Beach and walk the beach to the hostel. Then, I try swimming...it is cold and the undertow is RIDICULOUSLY STRONG! I shower, eat and begin begging hostel guests to drive me to Carlsbad tomorrow morning, so I can walk 14 miles from downtown Carlsbad to La Jolla and then ride bus #30 to the hostel. I NEED to walk. It has been two layover days and this will impact how far north I will make it in the next four months. Everyone is watching the football game in the common room. I am writing in my journal. The Brazilians are now back to blasting music in the reception area. I move to the deck for solitude.
Apparently the train conductor doesn't feel the need to wait for me to get on board...what? am I not missed on Amtrak?
