We had heard from people we had met in Lisbon that Lagos was amazing and once you get there you don´t want to leave, so we decided to change our plans a little and spend 3 nights here. Of course though, the perfect weather we had been experiencing decided to turn on us for our first beach town, and our first few days were either rainy or overcast.

After arriving at our hostel, Carlos House, we went for a wander around the town despite the weather. We walked down to the marina, and saw the old city walls and the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira which we decided to visit. It dates back to the 17th century and offers good views over the beach. I was interested to find out that Lagos was where the first slaves were brought to Europe, but we didn´t get to see the old slave markets.

We are happy to report that we are starting to get a tan!

Lagos is also a big party town so that night went our with some friends from the hostel. First stop was the famous Casa Rosa, where you could get all you can eat and drink for 10 euros! Then we moved on to Joe´s Garage, another well known party spot amongst backpackers.

The next day the weather had cleared up a bit so we decided to go on a cruise run by Joe´s Garage. It took us along the coast where we could see all the grottoes, and also offered unlimited drinks. Richard went for a swim in the ocean but says that the water was extremely cold! Unfortunately the ocean was rough and windy, and after 1 hour I ended up getting sea sick and spent the remaining 3 hours up the other end of the boat with all the other sea sick people.

For our last day in Lagos, the weather was back to normal so we finally got to go to the beach. The beaches here are really pretty, with cliffs and grottoes surrounding them. We walked to a beach which we had all to ourselves and lay in the sun reading for a while, and then walked further along the coast to an even more spectacular beach. We are happy to report that we are both starting to get a bit of a tan!
