Mostar / Bosnia
From Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Sicily, Italy Summer 2007 in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina on Jul 13 '07
Greetings from Mostar Bosnia, Mostar is several hours inland from the Croatian coast and several degrees warmer. This town is connected by a historical bridge that was rebuilt after the invasion of Yugoslavia. The town is separated on the East bank by Catholics and the west bank by Muslims. While the town is made up mostly of Muslims, they do live in Harmony, but just for now! The bridge not only separates various cultures and religions, but also ways of life. The town has a a great Turkish influence which the Catholics do not share. Mostar has mosque prayer ceremonies several times a day and Many Turkish homes. The town is filled with cobblestone streets , cute cafes and having a cup of coffee is a very memorable and serious cultural experience. I also observed many remembrances from the war with shell clad buildings and many yet to be rebuilt. One site remains a memorial to a Jewish synagogue by a Jewish marked gate, and a sign suggests reconstruction. I think the synagogue will be the last to be rebuilt if at all. The cultural differences between the inhabitants are quite different, and while appear in Harmony, I think its just a matter of time till there may be another major confrontation between the separated and different cultures of this picturesque town. Here are a few Pictures for you to enjoy.
