Monday 18th June – Fetihye – Olympos

Early morning breakfast on board for the last time, which was quite sad. We really enjoyed the company of everyone on board especially David and Julie from NZ! Headed out for Fetihye Otogar to catch a bus to Olympus. After having an apple tea with most people from the ship, we headed off with our Italian friends (Paola and Deborah) and our German friend. A long bus trip later around the gorgeous coast line we arrived in Olympus.

After recommendation from Kat on board the boat we headed for Saban treehouses, which is much more private than the larger pansyions in the area. After checking in we headed immediately to the beach. We thought it was a bit of a cheek charging 2 Lira to walk down to the beach, but we passed by so many roman ruins it was a worthwhile expense! On arrival to the pebble beach it was baking hot and an amazing setting.... the warm Mediterranean sea surrounded by lush mountains, ruins and caves... although a completely different beach setting to what we are used to, it was our best beach experience yet!

We then chatted with our friends about traveling around South America and getting some great tips we came back to the treehouses (ours being more of a hut) and had a delicious buffet dinner. At around 9pm we all headed for The Chimera – a famous steep hillside with eternal burning flames from the rocks.

The walk up the hill was 1km but seemed like 5km in the heat! We eventually got to the flames and it felt like lots of beach bonfires in the middle of the hill. You could smell the gases coming from the ground that in contact with air causes the flames which have been burning for centuries! Wandering around this site we came across very drunk Russians swigging straight vodka and jumping through the flames! The walk down was treacherous as it was dark and a rocky path, so we had many slips! Got back to the treehouses at midnight and searched for apple tea (our new favourite) unsuccessfully so headed indoors.
