A Return to Delhi

I ended up staying at a very inexpensive place near the New Delhi train station that offered "backpacker basics".  It really was quite basic, no shower head and an Eastern style toilet, but it did have a small color tv.  What I really wanted was a nice shower - the thing about Northern India in particular is you get so dirty walking around.  Often there are piles of garabge in the streets, with pigs and cows munching away.  It is also very common to see people peeing in the streets - when I was in Agra, a little boy - probablly around 3, exited one of the shops, dropped his pants and began peeing in the middle of the sidewalk.  It really makes you feel doubly bad when you see so many children running around in bare feet.

Since this was my last day in New delhi, I had no real plans.  I discovered that Connaught place, known for it's many bizarres was quite close.  I walked around the bizarre for a little, then took a taxi to the airport.  Of course the driver had us stop at a shopping place, but in exchange he knocked 50 Rs off the price, so I was fine with it.  It was actually one of the same places the auto-rickshaw driver took me the first day.  Obviously, they must offer a high commission to the drivers.

Is 50R alot of money? What's the biggest surprise about India?

Not really - about $1. But $1 can go along way here - most dinners are $2 and hotels are $4-5. When I arrived I had the misguided notion that I could come in as a quiet observer - boy was I wrong! For good or for bad, as a caucasian foreigner, you are put front and center.
