The biggest Abbey Yet!
From Our Excitement Continues in Mont-St-Michel, France on Jun 19 '07

We drove to another French landmark, Mont. St. Michel. This abbey was built in the 6th century and sits on a hill and can be seen from miles away. During certain times during the day the tides flood the lower parts of Mont. St. Michel and make in inaccessible. It is immense and it can only be imagined when you are there. My greatest memory of the visit is best described as this: five million stairs. At first you walk through a labyrinth of tourist stores, which is very Disneyland depressing. Next, are so many stairs that I couldn’t even count them. They twist and turn and just when you think that they end there are more. When resting at the various landings, I heard, “Oh no, more stairs” in at least 10 different languages. Once you reach the abbey it is all worth it: a beautiful sight to see.

After Mont. St. Michel we spent the night in Dinan which is a very old walled city. Our hotel was again, simple but charming. We had our first crepe (pronounced crep). Maddie had egg and cheese and I had bacon, mushroom, and crème fraiche. Madeline was a little surprised because the eggs inside were cooked over medium but she still liked it. We walked around the city and window shopped and went back to the hotel and hit the sack. After a million stairs, we deserved it.
The next day we drove down the Brittany coast to Ploubanazac. There we secured our car into the smallest garage, courtesy of the hotel, and then took the ferry to the Ile de Brehat.
