You know those moments when a thought suddenly smacks into you without warning?  The kind of realisation that changes your whole outlook on things?  Well this morning saw one of these moments for me.  I suddenly realised that today - September the 1st - is actually the first day of Spring here in South Africa (and for those of you in the mood to dampen my high spirits by quibbling about the Spring Equinox being only on 23 September feel free to check out Wikipedia which clearly states that in meteorology, it is by convention counted as the whole months of September, October, and November in the Southern Hemisphere!! Hah!)

Now much as I like the whole notion of Spring as a season - flowers, renewal, mating etc.  - this wasn't the reason for the impact of the thought.  Rather, it was the sudden realisation that yesterday, 31 August 2006, was THE LAST DAY OF WINTER that we will have for at least the next 487 days!!!!!!  Now that - you have to admit -should be enough to put a smile on the dial of even the grumpiest amongst us :)

THE LAST DAY OF WINTER that we will have for at least the next 487 days!!!!!!

It's true - from this point on its all sun, sea, sand and surf since we are moving into the warmer days here in South Africa, will then head to Europe for Summer next year, and then into Australia/New Zealand/the Pacific Islands for their Summer...and wait...when we get back to South Africa it's Summer here too - so scratch that earlier calculation - its more like a full 2 years of no Winter!!!  I feel like the characters in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when they kill the Ice Queen and break the endless Winter in Narnia!  Add to that the fact that it's Friday, and that the weekend is supposed to be 26 degrees plus - and all in all its a great way to start a day.  Hope yours is as GR8.
