Rainy days in San Sebastian

Next we headed north to San Sebastian, a beach town right near the border of France. It was lucky that we made it here though, because of a slight drama we had on our overnight train... Basically, the salesperson gave us tickets for May 29th instead of April 29th, even though she spoke English. So we were sitting in our seats and the train was ready to depart, when another couple came up to us with the same seat numbers. We then realised what had happened, and had to race off the train, find the rail staff {none of whom spoke English} and try to explain what happened. They were yelling and motioning for us to get back on the train as it was waiting to depart, so we did. Luckily the conductor was nice and he found some other seats for us {it was quite a packed train}.

The rain has been following us around and our entire time in San Sebastian was stormy and cold {only 10-12 degrees}, so we didn't get to go to the beach. It looked very pretty though and I can imagine it is a beautiful city in the summer. Because of the rain, we spent most of our time lazing about in cafes and in the hostel.
Apparently there are more Michelin rated restaurants here than anywhere else in the world
The food in San Sebastian is great. Apparently there are more 3 star Michelin rated restaurants here than anywhere else in the world. We tried tapas on both nights we were there and it was delicious. You go into a bar and the entire front bench is covered in plates of food, so you just choose what you want to eat. There are many plates of baguette slices, topped with roasted capsicum and other vegetables or seafood {tuna, crab, prawn etc etc}, marinated vegetables on sticks, roasted potatoes with alioli.... it was so good. I also really liked the churros con chocolate. This is a really thick hot chocolate like I mentioned before, but it comes with a plate of sweet pastry sticks that you dip in the chocolate... yum!

On our second day in San Sebastian, we decided to take a day trip to Bilbao to visit the world famous Guggenheim Museum, and I'm glad we went! The architecture by Frank Ghery was incredible, and apparently he drew the entire concept without ever taking his pencil off the paper. The artwork inside was also great, we both liked the sculptor Keifer best.
