Rotorua earned its nickname ‘Rotten-Rua’ as a result of the distinctly eggy smell that lingers around it, owing to the geothermal activity of the area - bubbling mud pools, hot geysers (not you Dan), that type of thing.

White water rafting was on today’s agenda, and what better place to do it than on the Kaituna River, boasting a 7 m high waterfall - the highest commercially rafted waterfall in NZ (possibly the world!). Once again we were made to look ridiculous in helmets and life vests before being plunged into the river on a giant yellow dingy. Dan and I were in command of our raft, paddling and steering our way over the rapids. Dan lost face somewhat when he ungracefully fell overboard as we rafted down the 7m waterfall – he was showing off thinking he didn’t need to hold on. The photographer did an excellent job of capturing his tumble, frame by frame.

That evening was a veritable culture-fest, as we were taken to a Maori village for a traditional Hangi meal and concert. We were given strict instructions not to laugh or even smile (quite difficult for me) as the Maori warriors grunted, slapped their thighs and thrust out their tongues as they performed the famous Haka. You wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of one of those fellas!
