Kangaroo Island
From my trip round the world! in Kangaroo Island, Australia on Dec 13 '06
One of the highlights of my trip to the Adelaide area was going on trip to Kangaroo Island for couple of days. It was a really fun trip and was good to see a different side to Australia as so far had only been in cities! Kangaroo Island is known for its wildlife and while we were there we saw quite a few different animals such as Koalas, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Sea Lions, Penguins and few others although not sure on the spellings of all of them! Had a really nice tour group, quite a mix of nationalities and ages! The tour took us to all the main places on the Island and most the activities were focused around seeing the wildlife but there were one or two other fun bits too! The weather wasn't so great the first day we were there but it didn't spoil things too much as was still able to do a lot. For example we went for a guided walk with the sea lions at Seal Bay and went to watch a pelican feeding. The walk with the seal lions was especially good as we were able to get really close to them, although we did have to keep a certain distance so not to disturb them.
The company I did the trip with had their own accomodation on the Island so it was only people from my trip and one other who were staying there so it made it nice and relaxed. It was quite a cosy little place and had a nice camp fire with marshmellows in the evening! The other group staying there were on a 3 day tour but in the evening we all had a meal and sat around the campfire together eating marshmellows and having a few drinks which was fun. I was the only english person on my group but there were a couple of english guys in the other group which was very lucky when it came to every nationality having to sing a song, as I let them drown me out as singing it harldy my strong point! There were quite a few dorm rooms there but we also could chose to sleep in a swag if we wanted to I went for that option! I hadn't really known exactly what a swag was but wanted to give it a go as not something you can do at home! It was nowhere near as uncomfortable as I expected and it was fun for one night but not something I want to have all the time!
The second day was pretty busy and went on a number of walks in different places such as in the Flinders National Park and also around Admirals Arch. We also went to see the Remarkable Rocks, which as the name suggests were pretty impressive! Their are big sand dunes on Kangaroo Island, which are named 'Little Sahara' and we went there during the afternoon and hand a go at sandboarding. We got the ferry back at about 7.30 and so was pretty tired by the time I arrived back at my hostel in Adelaide at 11 or so
